In October 1964, the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development presented students with a handcrafted ookpik similar to one used by the federal government as a souvenir at international trade fairs. Prior to receiving the gift, the CBC program Inquiry broadcast a story Mar. 16, 1964 explaining the use of the ookpik as a national symbol. Full magazine article p.18
